Anacapa School’s Giddy-Up Gala Rounds Up Unforgettable Night of Community and Celebration
Anacapa School’s annual fundraiser, the Giddy-Up Gala, held Saturday, April 26 at the Alhecama Theatre, was an extraordinary success and a true celebration of community spirit, Western flair, and heartfelt generosity.
The evening began with a Special Alumni Happy Hour, setting the stage with a warm atmosphere of connection and nostalgia. Alumni, families, and faculty gathered for this intimate pre-event, where stories and memories flowed just as freely as the conversation.
As the main event kicked off, the venue, stunning inside and out, came alive with Western-themed décor, toe-tapping music, and vibrant energy. Live music by Beau Red set the perfect tone, the delicious western fare was donated by Little Dom’s restaurant, and the night wrapped up on a high note with lively line dancing led by Kickin Country SB, keeping everyone on their feet and smiling until the very end.
During the evening, Head of School Mari Talkin delivered an inspiring presentation that highlighted Anacapa’s four foundational pillars: academics, community, arts and movement, and outdoors/travel.
She emphasized how each of these pillars shapes the student experience, pointing to last spring’s immersive trip to Costa Rica as a powerful example. There, students explored biodiversity, practiced Spanish, engaged in service learning, and strengthened their bonds with peers and teachers—an experience that brought together academic exploration, community building, creative engagement, and outdoor education in a meaningful, real-world setting.
Talkin also underscored the school’s commitment to small, discussion-based classes, cross-disciplinary projects, and fostering intellectual curiosity and critical and creative thinking. She spoke to the vibrant arts and movement programs that support self-expression and whole-child development. “Anacapa is a place where students are seen, valued, and inspired to follow their own educational paths, both in and outside of the classroom,” Talkin said.
Other highlights of the evening included a live auction, generous raffle prizes, a paddle raise, and plenty of laughter and celebration. With enthusiastic participation and heartfelt giving, the fundraiser exceeded expectations and underscored the strength of the Anacapa community. “The energy in the room was contagious,” said Jacob Pepper, Assistant Head of School. “Everyone was so supportive and excited to be together. It really felt like a celebration of our community.”
“This night was a shining example of not just what Anacapa does, but who we are,” Talkin said.
As boots tapped and smiles spread wide, the Giddy-Up Gala was not just a fundraiser. It was a vibrant affirmation of Anacapa’s mission, values, and future.
A special thanks goes out to Anacapa’s Gala Parent Committee: Lisa Smythe, Audrey Anderson, Emily Radtke, Julie Anderson, and Jolie Kocmur.
