| Soccer: The goal of this class is to enjoy the sport of soccer. Most of the
class time is devoted to playing class matches and scrimmages. The
remainder of the time is spent on fitness, skills, and theory. During
the second semester, the class also focuses on fitness training. From
time to time, the teachers arrange to play matches against teams from
other small private schools in the region.
Squash:
Squash
is a fast-paced athletic game, played by two players using strung
racquets and a small black rubber ball. The white-walled court is a
little smaller than a racquetball court. The game is considered
physically and mentally more challenging than racquetball, as the
players have to cover more of the court area during rallies and are
restricted as to where they can hit the ball by red line court markings.
Santa Barbara Athletic Club is one of the premier squash venues on the
West Coast. Squash is one of the fastest growing sports in the US,
particularly in private schools and colleges on the East Coast, but we
aim to catch up soon! Join us for a good workout and fun!

Kickboxing:
The purpose of the kickboxing class will
be to learn basic self-defense moves, as well as receive a great
physical workout. Martial Arts Family Fitness (122 East Gutierrez) is a
specialized martial arts / kickboxing studio. We will be participating
at the studio in safe, organized instruction led by professionals. An
Anacapa teacher will drive the students to the studio.
Tennis: This course is open to
players of all levels. We will be playing at the Santa Barbara
municipal courts on Coast Village Road, where we will work on our basic
tennis skills and fitness through drills and competitive play. Grading
will be on a 5-point scale: 1 point for punctuality, 1 point for proper
dress (t-shirt/tank top, shorts/athletic pants, tennis shoes), 1 point
for attitude, 1 point for participation and 1 point for improvement.
Volleyball: For beginners as well as more experienced players, this class uses the
gym at the City's Carrillo Street Recreation Center three blocks from
campus. Students participate in skill-building exercises and games.

| Surfing:
(Gordon Sichi): This is a
class for moderately or very experienced surfers who want to engage in
surfing as a physical activity. Equipment, including a properly sized
full winter wetsuit in very good condition, is required. Please note
that this is NOT a "learn how to surf" class because we surf at beaches
where conditions can be very competitive and there are no lifeguards.
Swimming:
(with a coach from Los Baños Municipal Pool): Students are transported
to Los Baños Pool in a school vehicle. A city coach and
Bryan Anderson will team
to design workouts for increasing student skills and speed. Slow and
fast swimmers are welcome. Non-swimmers may be admitted with the consent
of the instructor.
Golf:
Get started with
a game you can enjoy the rest of your life! Twin Lakes Golf
Course in Goleta will once again be the setting for this afternoon
elective, which is open to all levels. Anacapa alum Buff Platt (Class
of 1993) shares his love for the game and helps us hone our golf skills
with instruction on Thursdays. On Tuesdays, we play nine holes,
returning to campus on Tuesdays between 3:15 and 3:30. Bring your clubs
if you have them; if not, we’ll provide some basic equipment.
Sailing:
This course is a
comprehensive introduction to the basic principles of sailing. We will
be utilizing instructors and boats from The Santa Barbara Sailing
Center. Taught in stable Victory 21-foot keelboats or J-24’s, students
will be skippering on their first day of class. Curriculum includes
nautical terminology, docking, rules of the road, sail trim and shape,
headsail changes, reefing, crew teamwork and responsibilities, safety
procedures, points of sail, tacking/jibing, basic knots, and crew
overboard procedures.
Pilates:
This is a new elective for Anacapa! Jeannine Starr, a Pilates
instructor at Golden Tree Yoga, will be coming to Anacapa to teach “Mat
Pilates.” This style of Pilates focuses on integrating the entire body,
rather than exercising each body part separately. Some of the goals of
Pilates are to achieve better alignment and to train your body to work
more efficiently. No prior experience is necessary to enjoy this
course.
Gym:
Accompanied by an Anacapa teacher,
students in the Gym Fitness afternoon elective class walk to nearby 24
Hour Fitness, where they participate in a variety of activities. The
overall goal is for the students to acquire habits and skills that can
help them maintain a high level of fitness throughout their lives.
Activities include yoga, weight training, Pilates, balance exercises,
and cardiovascular workouts.
