Synthesis Unit 2008:  Film 101

(Speakers and Topics)

One more year the Anacapa students had the unique opportunity to listen to a variety of speakers and explore in depth a topic outside the regular curriculum.

During these annual units, as many as eighteen expert speakers make individual 45-minute presentations on different aspects of the chose topic.  Speakers hold Q-and-A sessions at the conclusion of their talk, and students are encouraged to ask questions to further their understanding.   After ach Synthesis Unit, students produce "products" designed to 'synthesize" the information learned during the presentations.

The topic of this year's Synthesis Unit was Film 101

“When you do work hard, luck comes your way.”

J.J.. Villard

Story Artist and Visual Development Artist

(The Anacapa School Class of 1998)

“Every single time you see a short film and it looks good, you know that somebody had a lot of money or a lot of passion.  It’s a miracle really because so much has to come together so perfectly.”

Jared Ingram

Screenwriter and Director

“The thing I learned during production on the film ‘Looking Up Dresses’ is that I couldn’t do it all.  I needed to trust more and micromanage less.  That’s work and life—you learn as you go.”

Josephine Ingram

Production Designer

“You need to know what scenes are gold—emotional heart and soul—from the beginning.”

Michael Rhodes

 Producer, Writer, and Agent

“One of the exciting things about documentary filmmaking is you don’t know where it is going exactly even when you begin.”

John Lengsfelder

Independent Filmmaker

“In doing trailers, you have two and one-half minutes to grab the hearts and minds of 60 million people and hope that 40 million will go see the movie.  It is about the art, but it is also about making the most money possible for the film.”

Evan Schrodek

Assistant Editor in Post-Production (The Anacapa School Class of 2000)

“There are four stages in making a film—development, production, distribution, and exhibition.”

Jackie Apodaca

 Actor and Lecturer, UCSB; Senior Columnist, backstage.com;

Producing Director, Shakespeare Santa Barbara

“On editing—you can go in with a story and edit to show it or you can check out what was shot and see what story it tells.  Usually it is a mix of both.”

Ryan Pettey

Film Editor

“The whole point of a movie is drama, so generally you can change whatever you need from real life in order to tell the story.”

Michael Stinson

 Professor, SBCC

“Regarding the documentary, you have to find the story within your subject because that is what engages us”

Alison Nigh Strelich,

Professor, Brooks Institute; Academy Award Nominee

“Even in a documentary you are fooling with reality to tell a story.  All films need to take you on a journey.”

Barry Fanaro

Screenwriter

“Every time you get ready to take a shot, it’s almost like being an airline pilot with a checklist to do before the plane takes off.”

Tracy Trotter

Cinematographer

“Documentary filmmaking takes a lot of creativity!  It has to be responsible to multiple points of view.  Reality is much more complicated than just black and white.”

Charles Wolfe

Professor, Film & Media Studies, UCSB

“Every documentary is made up of choices.  There is no such thing as being completely objective.”

Leonard Maltin

Film Critic

“We are all part of the first Internet generation—the best and the worst that’s ever happened to movies.”

Ben Shelton

Writer and Director

“I love movies!  I can watch four in a row at the film festival and then go home and watch more.”

Salli Eve

Performing Arts Teacher,

The Anacapa School

“Stories are about people.  The way to tell a story effectively is to narrow the scope (don’t put in too much), clarify your point of view, and focus on people.”

Jim Fabio

Freelance Documentary Filmmaker,

Air Force Reserve

Our students were very interested and engaged, and happy to see some Anacapa alums that reminded them to be nice to everybody since "everybody you meet can be important for your career", and it is nice to be nice anyway!
