Volunteering in the Community:
Cabin Leaders for 6th Grade Camp

Anacapa students have the opportunity to volunteer to be cabin leaders for local elementary schools during their spring outdoor education programs.

For over 16 years, The Anacapa School has been providing enthusiastic and committed students to lead cabins of sixth graders and to assist camp naturalists.  At Anacapa, Upper School students (grades 9-12) must first volunteer for the coveted position, and then they are chosen based on their academic and personal strengths.

It is a powerful opportunity requiring discipline and leadership. Students always come away with stories of adventure, overcoming challenges, and humor.

Here are some of the letters sent to Anacapa Cabin Leaders from their Peabody Charter School students:

“Thank you for being my cabin leader.  Thank you for making camp much more fun for us and I can’t wait until you come to lunch on Friday. I liked it when you were fair to everyone and when you were nice to everyone.  Thank you for saying nice compliments about me.”

“Thank you for all that you did.  You are the best cabin leader in the whole world. I can’t believe you put up with us for three nights, I would not have been able to do that, I would have probably quit on my first night. I had so much fun with you. Thank you for all that you did and I liked all the stories you told.  You were great!”

Anacapa Students came back from camp and shared their most memorable stories with their fellow students.

“The week of Science Camp was really fun. You are the best cabin leader someone could ever have.  I also want to thank you a lot because you missed four days of school to be with us. Thank you for reading us books until we went to sleep, helping us with our cheers everyday, helping us be in bed on time, letting us talk to you about our problems and for giving us the idea to sing a song in Spanish.”

Anacapa students went back to visit the campers at their school for lunch.

“The time I had with you was very memorable.  We had many funny moments.  You were like a big sister for three days. I was so impressed when you sang by the camp fire.  It was really nice of you to bring books for bedtime stories.”

“Thank you so much for being my cabin leader. You were a really nice and fun cabin leader, always reading us a story before we went to bed. You are so cool! Remember the time we were all being noisy and you read us a story and we all were quiet all of a sudden? Also, thanks for the time you offered to help me with my big, heavy backpack on the first hike we ever took at Science Camp. Thanks for getting us to where we had to go on time. And for donating time from going to school just so we could have enough cabin leaders. You did many cool things that I will always remember.”

“Being in the cabin was great and especially having you as our cabin leader. I thought you were really nice. I can’t believe you are going to go to college. It must be pretty cool that you are almost done with high school and going on to become an important person.”
