Presidio Internship.
California Early Days Living History Program 2008
The Presidio Pottery Project was initiated in April of 2006 in an effort to produce presidio-era vessel forms, designs, and glazes using traditional methods of manufacture and materials. It was expanded in 2007 to include architectural ceramics such as floor and roof tiles. Pieces produced by the project are used for furnishing period rooms at El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park and the Casa de la Guerra House Museum. The project is a joint venture of the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation's Archaeology, Curatorial, and Education Departments designed to integrate art, interpretation, and history with hands on demonstrations and classes.
Anacapa students have the opportunity to work at the Presidio Pottery Project as interns. In the Spring our interns are encouraged to help with ceramics workshops for students visiting during Early California Days (April 19th and 20th) and Presidio Founding Day (April 21st)
On April 21st Anacapa received a letter from the Internship instructor, Trust's Archeologist Mike Imwalle, commending the work of our students:
"Thank you so much for letting the students participate in the Early California Days Living History Program last Friday. I would like to say that they assisted me with the archaeology demonstration, but they did not. They run the entire station by themselves. As soon as they arrived, they jumped into the pit and took over the instruction of more than a hundred 3rd graders.
I was amazed at how passionate, confident, and articulate they each were with the younger kids. They representd the Anacapa School extremelly well and you should be proud of what wonderful students you have managed to attract. It has truly been a pleasure working with them."
