Volunteering in the Community:
Cabin Leaders for 6th Grade
Camp
Several times each year, Anacapa Upper School students have the opportunity to put their leadership skills to the test supervising local sixth graders as “cabin leaders” at their outdoor camps. This year, Anacapa cabin leaders worked in the hills outside Santa Barbara with sixth graders from Cleveland, Montecito Union, Peabody Charter, and Roosevelt schools.
Selected by the Anacapa faculty for this honor, the cabin leaders receive advice and training from Anacapa’s headmaster, sixth grade teachers, and camp personnel. They choose their own "nature names," such as Otter, Hummingbird, Rainbow, and Shrimp. Then it’s off to camp where they spend several nights in a cabin up in the Santa Ynez mountains with a large group of pre-teens. It can be a challenging experience, especially if the sixth graders simply want to run wild all night long.
When our students return from camp, we gather to listen as they tell us all sorts of hilarious stories about their experiences with the younger students. Whether it's sixth grade drama or students pulling pranks, something funny always happens up at camp. After the camp stories, the cabin leader welcome-back celebration usually ends with tasty ice cream sundaes for all the Anacapa students and teachers. Then the cabin leaders head home for some well-deserved sleep!
Besides simply being a great opportunity for Anacapa students to learn how to lead a group of younger students, the camp experience is also a way for our school to introduce itself to others in the community. Sometimes after the sixth graders see how awesome our students are, they end up coming to Anacapa a year or two later as new students. It's a fun win-win situation for everybody!Montessori Union School:
