Family Math Fair

“Fun” and “math” are not always found in the same place at the same time, but that is just what happened once again at Anacapa’s 17th annual Family Math Fair when our 7th through 12th grade students, parents, and friends worked to solve 12 different math problems in an hour and a half. The problems ranged from estimating the total number of candies in three differently shaped glass vases to complicated calculus, so there were challenges and success possibilities for everyone. The noisy and happy participants worked diligently to earn raffle tickets toward great donated prizes such as restaurant gift certificates, beauty products, gym memberships, and Anacapa tardy passes (which are always very popular)! This year’s surprise guest was former Anacapa science teacher Jason Mosier, who drove up from San Diego for the event.

The math faculty found the problems and the prizes, but the students did all the rest of the work, from set-up to decorations, from monitoring the answers to getting the rooms ready for classes the next morning. They deserve a lot of credit for their commitment and enthusiasm to make this one of Anacapa’s unique community learning activities.
